These healthy fats are called polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). These healthy fats are known collectively as essential fatty acids (EFAs) and these especially PUFAs are essential especially if you are dealing with psoriasis. Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) are PUFAs.

Does psoriasis go away with omega-3 fatty acids? There is currently no cure for psoriasis but there are various methods that can help to reduce or prevent psoriasis symptoms and flare-ups and omega-3s are one such natural method.

Various types of fish contain omega-3 fatty acids and while it is not fully understood how these essential fatty acids can help relieve psoriasis symptoms, it is believed that it is because they reduce the level of inflammation in the body. Inflammation is necessary especially to allow the body to heal after injury but excessive inflammation can increase the risk of developing various chronic diseases including psoriasis.

Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce the level of inflammation in the body by preventing the body from producing prostaglandins, leukotrienes and other hormone-like compounds which cause inflammation in the body including skin inflammation.

Omega-3 fatty acids also help to reduce and block certain hostile white blood cells that the immune system releases in an effort to deal with inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids doing all this has many benefits besides healing psoriasis such as reducing the risk of developing;

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Etc

Getting the most

  • The best sources of omega-3 fatty acids are cold water fish with the top sources being salmon, Atlantic herring, anchovies, Atlantic mackerel, halibut, albacore tuna, mussels, oysters, trout, sardines, etc.
  • Mercury is always a concern when you eat fish so try to avoid eating king mackerel, swordfish, shark, golden bass, etc which contain high levels of mercury.
  • Two 3-ounce servings of fish per week are sufficient to get all the omega-3 fatty acids you need. This is because too much fish can be a bad thing.
  • Consider the source of the fish. In some cases, wild caught fish can be healthier but in other cases, farm raised (without antibiotics or hormones) can be some of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • If you hate fish, consider fish oil supplements or omega 3 supplements.
  • If you don’t like fish or fish oil supplements, a rich plant source of omega 3 fatty acids is flax. While fish is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids when compared to flaxseed, the latter is better than nothing if you are averse to anything fish related.
