Whipped Shea Butter Mix
Sometimes especially in the winter, using coconut oil alone may not be enough to combat the dryness and keep skin moisturized. If your skin gets dryer in the winter and you need extra moisturization or if you do not want to use coconut oil alone, a whipped shea butter mix may work better for you. Shea butter is used as the foundation with other oils added to the shea butter such as coconut oil, neem oil, emu oil, castor oil, olive oil, etc.
Shea butter is extracted from the nuts of the Shea-Karite tree which is native to East and West Africa although the West African version features more vitamin A than the East African version. Vitamin A is the skin vitamin as well as vitamin E which is also present in shea butter. The best shea butter usually comes from nuts that can have taken up to 30 years to bear, which allows them to have a high content of essential fatty acids that in addition to the vitamins, makes shea butter excellent for psoriasis and many other skin conditions. The following is a simple whipped shea butter mix that you can make.
Whipped Shea Butter Recipe (adjust as you see fit)
10 oz shea butter
5 oz coconut oil
2.5 oz emu oil (optional)
2.5 oz neem oil (optional)
10 drops essential oil (tea tree, Roman Chamomile, Bergamot, Lavendar, etc, are great for psoriasis) (optional)
If the shea butter is soft and malleable, there is no need to melt it. If on the other hand, especially in winter, it is very hard, melt the shea butter in a double boiler until about halfway melted. Do not let it boil and do not melt it all the way. In the summer, coconut oil will usually be in liquid form due to the heat but in winter it will usually be solid. If it is a solid, melt it all the way down in the double boiler and add to the shea butter. Add the rest of the oils or any other oils that you prefer.
Using a stick blender, blend the oils and butter until nice and fluffy (about 10 to 15 minutes while taking breaks throughout so that the blender is not overly taxed). Once the mixture starts to thicken, add the essential oils (optional) and blend for a few more minutes.
When done, place the whipped shea butter in a container and place in the refrigerator until it is completely cool and store in a cool dry place. Proceed to enjoy this homemade decadence on your skin anytime your skin needs it!
