Scalp psoriasis symptoms can be embarrassing as they can be highly visible and can look like a bad case of dandruff and flake onto shoulders and clothing. It can also be very itchy if severe only to worsen if you scratch or pick at the scales. Treatment can be difficult for scalp psoriasis but there are some homemade scalp treatment strategies that will help manage scalp psoriasis.
Scalp Psoriasis Treatment
As mentioned previously, scalp psoriasis treatment can be challenging. Like with many other types of psoriasis, trial and error is the approach to follow because a treatment or treatments that may work for one sufferer may not necessarily work for another and vice versa. Conventional treatment methods may help as well as many holistic and home remedies for psoriasis.
Homemade Scalp Treatment Options
This is your first step in combating scalp psoriasis. Look for shampoos that contain active ingredients such as salicylic acid, tar, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, steroids, etc. These can help reduce the scaling as well as the thickness of the scales.
Avoid using blow dryers after shampooing and conditioning as they may dry the scalp which can make scalp psoriasis worse. Air drying works better with this type of psoriasis.
3. Oil Therapy
Your diet should already include healthy oils that are high in omega 3 fatty acids that have been shown to be anti-inflammatory which makes them beneficial for psoriasis which results from inflammation. Great sources of omega 3 fatty acids include salmon, mackerel and other cold water fish.
Flaxseed oil is also rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs) especially linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid which promote skin health as well as cell membrane health. While you can consume a tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily, it is more beneficial to consume a tablespoon of milled flaxseeds which contain more of the EFAs than flaxseed oil. Add the flaxseeds to oatmeal, salads, smoothies, etc.
Olive Peanut Oil Psoriasis Scalp Therapy
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup peanut oil
Combine and apply to the scalp as a pre-shampoo treatment. Cover with a plastic shower cap or plastic bag and leave on for at least 30 minutes or overnight before shampooing.
This oil mixture can also be used as a scalp treatment as needed without shampooing.
4. Listerine for Scalp Psoriasis
This is a homemade scalp treatment for scalp psoriasis that is used by some but it is unclear why applying Listerine (original formula) onto the scalp daily has been effective for some sufferers of this type of psoriasis by decreasing flaking and itching. Listerine does contain alcohol and herbal oils that feature antifungal properties.
5. Herbal Teas
You can either consume several cups of herbal teas daily using chamomile, yellow saffron, slippery elm bark, etc, that are great for promoting skin health or you can make herbal rinses to be used directly on the scalp such as;
Saffron Tea Mist
2 teaspoons yellow saffron
2 liters hot water
Combine and steep for about 15 to 20 minutes. Once cooled, strain and place in a spray bottle. Use as a final rinse after shampooing and conditioning. Can also be used throughout the day to relieve the scalp psoriasis symptoms.
