Home remedies for psoriasis usually use ingredients commonly available in the home. They are also cheap and easy. Try some of these remedies and see whether they work for you either alone or in addition to any current treatment you may be using.
Home Remedies for Psoriasis
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
If you cannot get access to apple cider vinegar (ACV) you may use white vinegar however, ACV especially organic, unrefined and which contains the “mother” is the best as it contains many nutrients that can benefit the skin and is one of the best home remedies psoriasis.
ACV has a well documented history of being able to help with many conditions as well as calm skin inflammations that are associated with psoriasis. The diluted ACV can be applied to psoriasis plaques and fingernails and toenails can be dipped in this solution.
Mix equal parts ACV and distilled water and either apply to the lesions with a cloth or cotton swabs or dip fingernails or toenails into the solution. Make as much of this solution as you need. The smell does go away after a while so you do not need to rinse it off.
2. Plastic Wrap
Plastic wraps can be used to cover psoriasis lesions after applying a topical medication or to keep the area moisturized longer after applying a lotion. If you have open sores, these plastic wraps can help to keep medication or lotion in place. It is also the best way to force medication into the lesions.
Apply the medication or lotion to the lesion and cover with any normal plastic wrap and leave on for at least an hour or so and then remove. You want to remove the plastic wrap before the skin becomes soggy or pruny and susceptible to other infection.
Oils are wonderful for the skin and, scalp and on the inside especially if they are organic and cold pressed and are some of the best home remedies for psoriasis. Oils help to keep the skin or scalp from drying out which is important if you are battling psoriasis. Various oils can be used such as olive oil, castor oil, emu oil, coconut oil, etc. Even mineral oil can be used but mineral oil does not contain many of the beneficial properties of the previously mentioned oil such as fatty acids. Using mineral oil is simply a great way to make sure that your skin does not dry out. It helps to seal in moisture.
Other natural oils such as olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil, emu oil, flaxseed oil, etc, can help to reduce inflammation and remove and heal flaky skin.
You can use these oils in various ways. For the natural oils such as olive, coconut oil, flaxseed oil, you can consume a tablespoon a day in addition to applying these oils to the skin, to a bath, as a pre-shampoo treatment for scalp psoriasis, etc. If adding to a bath, include a handful of Epsom salts or sea salts which will provide extra healing to the skin affected by psoriasis. Vegetable oils, canola oils, etc, can also be used. Most oils are usually great for the skin.
- Add two teaspoons of the oil to a large glass of milk and add to a bath before soaking in order to help soothe the skin, or simply squirt the oils to bath water.
- For scalp psoriasis, warm the natural oils such as olive oil or castor oil and gently massage into the scalp to soften and make it easier for the flakes to be removed. Leave on for at least an hour or overnight and shampoo.
4. Baking Soda
Baking soda can help to relieve the itch associated with psoriasis lesions.
Into 3 gallons of water, dissolve 1 ½ cups of baking soda and place this on the areas that itch as an anti-itch compress.
5. Boric Acid
Boric acid also works as a great home remedy for psoriasis. You can get boric acid at your local pharmacy.
Into 16 ounces of water, add 3 tablespoons of boric acid and place on the psoriasis lesions as a compress.
